    Privacy Policy & Cookies

    Overview

This is my personal site. I'm Matt Cortland, and I'm responsible for any personal data it collects. This page covers what that data is, why I collect it, and how to have it deleted.

    The newsletter

If you sign up for Life After Wizards, I store your email address, your first name if you give it, the page you signed up on, the site that sent you there, and any campaign tags in the link you followed. I use it to send you the newsletter and to see which pages bring people in. I only add you when you tick the consent box.

Sign-ups are held in Blackmail, the newsletter platform I built and run, and emails are sent through Resend. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops the emails straight away. If you'd like your details deleted completely, email me.

Analytics, only if you say yes

The banner asks whether I can use an analytics cookie. If you accept, a small script from Blackmail records which pages you view and where you arrived from, and sets the cookies below so repeat visits count once. If you decline, the script never loads and none of these cookies are set.

    Cookies and storage

    • cookie_consent (browser storage, always): remembers whether you accepted or declined, so the banner doesn't keep asking.
    • bm_vid (only if you accept): a random visitor ID that lasts 365 days.
    • bm_ft and bm_lt (only if you accept, and only when you arrive from a link with campaign tags): the first and latest campaign that brought you here. Last 365 and 30 days.

To change your mind, clear this site's data in your browser and the banner will ask again.

    Other services

The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, to run and protect the site. Fonts load from Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google for them. The two videos on the homepage are YouTube embeds in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which YouTube says doesn't store information about you until you press play. Links to other sites, such as GitHub and LinkedIn, follow those sites' own policies.

    Your rights

You can ask me for a copy of what I hold about you, or ask me to correct or delete it. If you're unhappy with how I've handled your data, you can complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
